The aim of the present paper was to control the growth of laterals shoots in tomatoes by Prohexadione Calcium (Pro-Ca) application, a gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor. Paronset® tomato variety was used. Viviful® was used as source of Pro-Ca containing 27.5% of active ingredient. The first year, in pot experiments under greenhouse conditions, were tested four dosages of Pro-Ca (0, 100, 200 and 300 mg L-1). Dry lateral shoot mass, number of lateral shoots and tomato yield were evaluated. In the second and third year, the experiment were on field and four Pro-Ca dosages (0, 250, 500 and 750 mg L-1) were tested. In the second year, there was an additional treatment, without Pro-Ca and with weekly manual lateral shoot removal. The evaluations were fresh and dry mass of laterals shoots (first year), length and number of lateral shoots (second year) and tomato yield. Only in the third year there was a reduction on average lateral shoot length (about 17%) with the Pro-Ca application evaluated on the 45th day after the planting. This year, the Pro-Ca did not affect neither the number of shoots per plant nor the fruit yield. In the second year, there was a reduction of fruit yield with the increase of Pro-Ca dosages, having no effect on lateral shoot dry mass. The weekly manual lateral shoot removal increased the fruit yield comparing to the Pro-Ca applications. The reduction obtained in the length of the lateral shoots (third year) does not allow to reduce the lateral shoot removal operations.
